How Do I Start a Conversation With Someone New at a Singles Event?
I've hosted hundreds of events for singles in their 50s and 60s, and there's one mistake I see people make all the time.
Here's one quick rule to make sure you avoid the same mistake.
The mistake I see all the time
So what happens? You're at an event. You start a conversation with someone you don't know anything about, and you're trying to build connection.
Let's say you ask them a question about the last place they traveled to, and they share, "I went to Colorado and I went skiing with my best friend."
And then you immediately launch into a story about the last time you went to Colorado... or the last time you went skiing.
This leaves the other person feeling unseen and you could lose the connection.
But don't worry... I got you boo 😘
My Rule of Three
Here's my Rule of Three to make sure this doesn't happen to you:
Ask three questions before you start talking about yourself.
Using the Colorado example, you could ask:
"What else did you do while you were there?"
"Are you an avid skier?"
"What made you pick Colorado?"
Why it works
Each question takes the conversation in a new direction. You learn what matters to them... and asking thoughtful questions makes you seem more interesting.
Try it at your next event
