Getting Back Into Dating? 8 Things Men Need to Know

A lot of the men I work with are just getting back out there in the dating world… and it's intimidating.

It's uncharted territory that leaves them feeling unsure and uncomfortable.

My heart goes out to these guys, so I asked my community for help. I posted this question:

Some men are just getting back out there after years away from dating. What's one piece of advice you'd share to help them out?

The responses poured in fast… from both men and women.

These were the top 8 takeaways…

1. Work on yourself first.
Do the inner work before putting yourself back out there. Know how to sit with discomfort instead of getting defensive when someone shares their reality with you. It changes everything about how you show up. (This was the most common feedback... from both men and women.)

2. Be a great communicator.
Answer texts promptly. Call when you say you'll call. It sounds small. It's not... consistency is one of the fastest ways to build trust with someone new.

3. Start fresh.
Be open-minded. Whoever you're dating now isn't the person who hurt you before.

4. Dating should be fun.
Don't expect to find your person immediately. Focus on getting to know people as friends first... enjoy the moment, enjoy the process.

5. You don't have to perform.
The guys who feel the least pressure are the ones who just show up as themselves. That's really the whole secret.

6. Be curious.
Ask questions and show interest in what the other person says.

7. It should feel effortless.
Organic, effortless conversation is what tells you if a connection is real.

8. Meet it with optimism.
Good women are still out there waiting on a good man. Don't let social media distract you from that. You can't control what other people do, but you can control how you act.

If you're one of those guys… this list might feel like a lot right now. That's okay. Nobody figures this out overnight, but you have to start to get momentum.

And you don't have to do it alone. That's why community is so important.

I started Throwback Dating because I saw people going through this challenging chapter of life on their own… people dating for the first time in 20+ years, surrounded by friends and family who are married and can't relate.

When you're ready… we're here for you.
